A callous palm—the inflamed skin underneath the thickened epidermis, hidden yet painful once exposed to the outer elements. A callosity is not the increase of the skin's resilience, nor is it true healing from continuous attrition; it's merely an attempt to hide what is raw under layers upon layers of induration.
Such is man, and his psyche.
